YOGHURT: A REMEDY FOR DEPRESSION
Researchers have discovered that not only is this dairy product good for gut inflammation, blood sugar reduction and giving a clear skin but it also helps with treating depression. The study carried out by University of Virginia School of Medicine, found out this creamy snack contains lactobacillus a probiotic bacteria found in live cultures yoghurt which is effective for blood pressure, stress and depression reduction.
They noticed that the amount of Lactobacillus in the gut affects the level of a metabolite in the blood called kynurenine, which has been shown to drive depression.
The big hope for this kind of research is that we won’t need to bother with complex drugs and side effects when we can just play with the microbiome. It would be magical just to change your diet, to change the bacteria you take, and fix your health – and your mood. Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions in the United States. Up to 7 percent of the population experience a major depressive episode. It’s a huge problem and the treatments are not very good, because they come with huge side effects. Explained lead researcher Dr Alban Gaultier.
This research was backed by McMaster University researchers who warned that although yoghurt helps with reducing depression, it should not be taken alone without further medication; they also encouraged people going through depression to consult with their physicians before stopping any form of treatment.
