WHEN YOU FIND LOVE IN AN UNEXPECTED PLACE
In the midst of chaos, racism and conflict of interest, one thing that upholds the place of peace is Love. From the love story of Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian, it is easy to deduce that love knows no colour and have no labels. It is tolerant of other people’s differences and devoid of prejudice. It is important not to confuse attachment as being love – the former is associated with fear and dependency while the latter is an act of caring, having someone’s best interest and wellbeing as a priority in your life which in turn brings about emotional satisfaction and happiness.
Serena affirms this “Ultimately I wanted to be with someone who treated me nice, someone who was able to laugh with me and someone who understood my life and someone that loved me and you know, I’m sure there are other people out there. But you know, Alexis is the one I connected with, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Armed with the premonition that she would never have thought of being with a white guy, her thoughts were proven wrong when it became vivid that the pair was a ‘good fit’ when the couple met in May 2015 at the Cavalieri Hotel in Rome. The adorable couple further decided to seal the union of their marriage by tying the knot in November in a gorgeous fairytale New Orleans wedding.
Noting that they belonged to different worlds. She being a 23-time Grand Slam winning tennis superstar and Alexis, a tech millionaire who co-founded Reddit, she sees their relationship as a testament to the power of love.
“Literally all I tell Alexis is, ‘well, you know, there’s such a difference between White people and Black people.’ He always gets to hear about the injustices that happen; that wouldn’t happen if I were White. It’s interesting. I never thought I would have married a White guy, either, so it just goes to show you that love truly has no colour, and it just really goes to show me the importance of what love is.”
