News about Cambridge analytica hit the tabloids and made head lines on the news about a week ago. Never heard of Cambridge Analytica?

Cambridge Analytica is a consulting firm which combines data mining, data brokerage and data analysis with communication for electoral  process.
The company has been accused to have used personal information harvested from more than 50 million Facebook profiles without permission to build a system that could target voters with personalised political advertisements based on their psychological profit.
Facebook has received a number of warnings about its data security policies in the past and had also been aware of Cambridge analytica breach since 2015 but only suspended the firm and the Cambridge university researcher who harvested users data from facebook earlier this month.
To confirm this allegation a former facebook manager warned that hundreds of millions of users are likely to have had their private information used by private companies.
This implies that not all the information dished out on facebook or any other social media platform is safe. There’s an invisible stalker (hacker) who can easily access these information, manipulate them and use them for whatever they wish.
We have to make conscious efforts to moderate the information we share on our social media platforms
On Sunday afternoon facebook ran adverts in several major newspaper companies in the  UK and US with the headline that says “We have a responsibility to protect your information. If we can’t, we don’t deserve it” although it was done to placate its users it doesn’t change the fact that our information has been compromised.
Which makes one wonder if the apology is genuine or it is made because of the billions of dollars that has been wiped off Facebook’s stock market valuation due to the #Deletefacebook movement which has spooked their investors.
It is easy to make small of a news like this in Africa but it will interest you to know that our politicians are willing to go any length to be in power. In an interview on Channels TV a representative of Cambridge analytica said a Nigerian Billionaire employed their services for the 2015 election in favour of his candidate Former president Goodluck Jonathan and the billionaire was willing to pay as much as $2 million dollars. The company produced a hate-filled advert that cast Buhari as a religious bigot who would introduce Sharia into the country.
Be weary of the stalker at your back, not every thing that happens in your life should make a post on Facebook and on the gram.
