The spread of COVID-19, or the novel coronavirus, has put the country into self-quarantine to protect citizens from contracting the virus. As a result, the CDC has advised people to wear face masks whenever they are outside. This week, tennis star, Serena Williams, announced that she will be making a massive donation of needed face masks for children as schools reopen.

The Grand Slam champion told her followers on Instagram that she will be working with t-shirt manufacturer Bella+Canvas, the National School Board Association, and educational brand Scholastic to donate over 4 million face masks to schools across the United States. The new partnership will also provide materials for the classroom to over 100,000 schools for 54 million children as a new school semester looms.

“I’m grateful to be able to help educate our schools about this resource, and to be given the opportunity to serve so many students,” Williams wrote in a social media post. The announcement comes as schools around the country scramble to figure out how they will reopen with a recent spike in cases among young children within the last month.
