A project aimed at increasing public engagement in the revision process of the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) is holding a webinar where local and international stakeholders will explore global experiences of community input in climate plan implementation.

Organised by the Centre for Climate Change and Development (CCCD), Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (AEFUNAI), Ebonyi State, in partnership with World Resources Institute (WRI) and Federal Ministry of Environment, the virtual conference is themed: “Public Participation in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Drafting and Implementation: Experiences from around the world”. It will hold on Monday, October 19, 2020.

The aim of the webinar, according to the organisers, is to share ideas and best practices on the role and involvement of stakeholders as well as the public in the drafting and implementing the NDC around the world.

While expressing the hope that the event would generate ideas that the NDC Partnership and the Nigerian government can use to broaden public participation in the ongoing NDC revision due for submission in 2021, the organisers stated that takeaways from the webinar would be documented and submitted to relevant government agencies for actions and implementations.

Professor Chukwumerije Okereke, Director, CCCD AEFUNAI, is host and facilitator while Chief Sharon Ikeazor, the Environment Minister of State, is guest of honour.

The panelists include: Dr Thomas Hale, Associate Professor in Global Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford; Dr. Malle Fofana, an expert on strategic and organisation planning, climate change, green growth model, industry and private sector development; Yamide Dagnet, Director, Climate Negotiations at WRI; Professor Donald Brown, world-renowned expert in environmental science and in international climate change ethics movement; Jessica Cooke, Team Lead, Climate Change Policy Agenda, Plan International; Huzi Mshelia, National Facilitator, Nigeria’s NDC Revision Programme; Rachael Razzo, Policy Advisor, Italian Climate Network; and Olumide Idowu, Co-founder, the International Climate Change Development Initiative (ICCDI Africa).

The webinar is organised under “Promoting critical analysis of, and stakeholders’ engagement with the revision of Nigeria’s NDC,” a project is being undertaken by the CCCD AEFUNAI, with support from the WRI.

The one-year initiative that commenced from July 2020 will, according to Project Coordinator, Professor Okereke, help to widen the horizon of the discourse and compliment the current government led NDC revision process.

Commenting on the webinar, he said: “I am delighted that the Centre for Climate Change and Development (CCCD) at AEFUNAI has assembled renowned experts from around the world to share their knowledge and experiences on public participation in NDC drafting and implementation.

“In bringing these highly respected and diverse panelists from across the world to share their thoughts on how to involve key stakeholders in climate change policy making, CCCD is delivering on its mandate to serve as a major think tank for facilitating research, awareness creation and advocacy for sound  climate and development policies and practices in Nigeria.

“I am extremely thankful to the World Resources Institute and the Federal Ministry of Environment their partnership in organising the webinar. I am also thankful to the Honourable Minister of State for Environment, Chief Sharon Ikeazor, for agreeing to serve as the guest of honour in the webinar and for her commitment to promoting good environmental governance in Nigeria.”
