Actress/producer Marsai Martin is developing a new series entitled “Baddies” focused on telling the stories of “trailblazing Black women,” Shadow and Act reports.
Martin rose to prominence as an actress on ABC’s hit show Black-ish. In 2019, she made her production debut with her film Little co-starring alongside Regina Hall, becoming the youngest person to executive produce a major studio film at just 14-years old. Martin then became the youngest person to secure a first-look deal with a studio when she inked a deal with Universal and launched her production company, Genius Productions, shortly after.
Now 16-years-old, Martin is developing her first series under the Genius banner. The unscripted television series, tentatively entitled “Baddies,” will focus on telling the stories of “trailblazing Black women” across the sports, entertainment, politics and innovation sectors. Martin has partnered with ITV America’s Sirens Media to bring the series to life, merging her love of pop culture to shine a spotlight on pioneering African American women.
Sirens president Jessica Sebastian-Dayeh spoke about Martin’s new series, saying, “Our team continues to be blown away by Marsai on multiple levels. She’s a creative force of nature and an important voice in our culture, and aside from her obvious talents on camera, is a very deft and thoughtful executive behind the scenes. We’re proud to partner with her and Genius on this series that will shed light on vital stories in imaginative and unexpected fashion.”
Marsai Martin, Joshua Martin, Carol Martin, Nicole Dow and Prince Baggett of Genius will be partnering with Sebastian-Dayeh of Sirens to produce the “Baddies” project. In a statement issued to The Hollywood Reporter, Martin spoke candidly about why she felt the series was important given the current social climate.
“Black women have always contributed to American culture. They’ve just never gotten the recognition. This show is a fun way of letting people know how dope we are,” Martin said.
No word yet on when the project will be released but we are excited!
