So, Annie used to have this bad habit of skipping breakfast. Her stomach just wouldn’t accept anything that early until probably during the late morning hours. It wasn’t until she developed the medical condition, stomach ulcer, that she had a rethink and forced herself to learn to eat before beginning her day.

Now, with the busy life of a working adult, she still finds it difficult to eat breakfast not because she doesn’t want to but for want of time to prepare it. However, this excuse is just flimsy, right? She should be able to get her breakfast ready on time if she is properly organized, isn’t it?

Well, I am guessing quite a number of people are in the same boat too especially single ladies.

But then, health is wealth and as the saying goes, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” You don’t want to get started on your work activities on an empty stomach. Mental activity saps up a lot of energy and skipping breakfast could not only take a toll on your health but also on your job, after all, only a healthy person can work effectively and efficiently.

Here are some reasons why you should have a rethink about skipping breakfast:

  • It can cause low blood sugar: As the name implies, breakfast is actually breaking the fast which is the time you spent asleep all through the night. Eating in the morning helps restore the strength and blood sugar in your body. Skipping breakfast results in you feeling overly hungry, irritable and fatigued.
  • Slow metabolism: Missing out on breakfast can cause your body to slow down the rate at which it burns calories thereby storing up a lot more in preparation for perhaps starvation. Skipping meals is a very bad idea for losing weight. Instead, controlling your meal intake is what you need.
  • An increase of stress hormones: Studies have shown that the stress hormone called cortisol, produced by the adrenal glands are highest at around 7am. Breakfast has a positive effect on this hormone hence the necessity to NOT skip it so the hormone level can be brought down. High level of cortisol could result in you feeling anxious or jittery.
  • Increased risk of heart disease: Contrary to what you might think, skipping breakfast can make you susceptible to weight gain and increased risk of atherosclerosis, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol.

So, what do you say? I hope you rethink your stand on skipping breakfast because your health is important.
