HOW TO PREVENT STRETCH MARKS DURING PREGNANCY
Stretch marks also known as striae dispense or striae gravidarum are fine lines that appear on a range of body parts either during puberty or pregnancy. They mostly appear on the stomach, thighs, hips, breast, buttocks, upper arm and lower back. Its colour can vary from white, purple, red and sometimes pink. Stretch marks happen when the skin in a particular body area is pulled by rapid growth or stretching and can cause discomfort.
Most pregnant women gain about 30 pounds during the 9 months course and as such, over half of them are prone to having stretch marks. The good part of pregnancy stretch marks, is that they begin to fade few weeks after pregnancy and become pale silver or white colour.
However, you might be excited to know that stretch marks can be prevented during pregnancy. Here are some tips to guide you through this period.
- Stay hydrated: Drink lots of water because it helps to keep the skin soft and plump. However, caffeinated beverages should be avoided as it increases your chances of developing stretch marks.
- Use moisturiser: Moisturiser also helps in hydrating the skin. Get coconut oil, cocoa butter, almond oil, shea butter, wheat germ oil and rub on areas where you notice stretch marks developing.
- Eat a skin nourishing diet: Take more foods rich in antioxidants like spinach, vegetables, strawberries, blueberries and vegetables. They help to protect and nourish the skin.
- Vitamin C: Take fruits rich in Vitamin C because it is effective in treating free radical damage. Fruits like guava, orange and green pepper are highly effective.
