HOW TO BEGIN YOUR JOURNEY UP THE CAREER LADDER WITHOUT PRIOR EXPERIENCE
Jobs today are not what they used to be in the past. Getting jobs today are not as easy as they used to be.
These days, it is expected that you have a kind of portfolio to launch yourself into the corporate world. It’s not necessarily about your degree anymore or the GP you graduated with. It is more of your skill and what you can bring to the table.
These days, excellence on paper is not the same with excellence hands-on. There are people who may not have the required GPA for a particular job qualification but because they possess the skill to do the job and have shown over time that they are really good at it, they get hired.
The thing here is that sometimes, job hunting can be tricky. Your portfolio can either project you as underqualified or overqualified but it is safer to be overqualified so you don’t lower your standards and settle for less.
How can that portfolio be created especially without experience?
1.HAVE A PERSONAL BLOG
A personal blog is a great platform to showcase your skills especially for job positions that involve writing. You may not have had professional experience as a writer but submitting your blog link as your portfolio along with your application, gives the hirers an opportunity to see your writing skills, your creativity, your voice and rate you on that even if you have no prior job experience.
2.UTILIZE SIGNIFICANT KEYWORDS
Be sure to attentively and critically go through job vacancies before sending in your application. The advert or job brief always holds keywords in the employers’ statements. Use of these keywords in your own documents especially your cover letter matches your application to the listing and may instantly resonate with the hirers.
3. BE SURE TO NETWORK
Networking is key in the career world so don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed about maximally utilizing as much influence and opportunity as you can out of your contacts and networks. However, you can only do this if you have great value to impact on them too. You don’t want to seem like an opportunist, taking from and not depositing in them. The world of employment is about making the right connections. So if you have them in your contacts, use it to your advantage.
4.GREAT COVER LETTER
There is only so much there that can set you apart from others when it comes to the details of your actual CV or resume. Hence, it is absolutely necessary to put your best into making your cover letter really perfect and come out great. It’s not so much about using many words but particularly about using the right words.
Some hirers find it necessary to check out your social media pages when you send in your application. In the light of this, you really should be mindful of what you post on your platforms – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. that could kill your chances in a second. The more professional and mature you seem, the better your chances of being considered despite your lack of experience.
