While in secondary school, I had this friend with dandruff and she would always complain about how she felt left out because other girls refused to touch her hair or help her make a new hairstyle. Even though it was obvious she made efforts to treat this hair condition, nothing was working. All of a sudden I began to notice visible changes in her hair texture. My friend who used to have full thick long hair was having scanty, short and coloured hair. Not until I gathered the courage to question her; she told me about a random chemical she used which she thought would help get rid of the dandruff, instead did otherwise. Eventually she had to go bald.

Dandruff also called Seborrhoea, targets the scalps of many people, young and old. It can also lead to other skin issues like pimples and acne. Dandruff is a scalp condition marked by flaking on the scalp and its a major hair problem faced by men and women. Although, dandruff is not a serious scalp condition, it can be embarrassing and sometimes difficult to treat.

The cause of dandruff is still unknown but from research, dandruff is definitely not related to an individual’s personal hygiene. People with certain skin or medical conditions like Parkinson, contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, people with excessive oily skin and dry skin are prone to having dandruff. Another factor that can trigger dandruff is the use of inappropriate hair product/chemical.

There are homemade remedies that can be used to treat dandruff but in more severe cases, it is advisable you see a doctor.

Here are some homemade remedies that can be used to treat dandruff

Coconut oil and lemon juice:

Mix coconut oil and lemon juice then massage your scalp gently with this mixture and leave for 20 minutes before washing off with shampoo. The good thing about this mixture is that coconut oil helps to nourish the hair while lemon juice fights off dandruff without having to use chemicals.

Baking soda:

Before using this, make sure you wet your hair slightly then rub a spoonful of baking soda in your scalp and leave for 1 – 2 minutes before washing off.

Aloe vera:

The good thing about aloe vera is that it also helps to stop scalp itching. Aloe vera doubles as a dandruff and itch fighter. Just massage aloe vera into scalp before shampooing to help stop itching and cure dandruff.

Garlic and honey:

Garlic is widely known as an antioxidant and It also helps with curing dandruff. In other to avoid the garlic smell, try crushing your garlic and mixing it with honey before applying to the scalp. This solution works pretty fine; you can give it a try.
