The skin has many functions, making it one major multitasker of the human body. It is the first line of defence between our bodies and our environment, thereby protecting us from bacteria, viruses, and pollution and other harmful substances that we come in contact with while living
our day to day lives.

This being said, it’s a no brainer that it is of utmost importance that we care for our skin. This doesn’t mean we need to break the bank in order to get expensive skincare products. On the contrary, less is more when it comes to a healthy skin care routine.

Proper skin care and healthy lifestyle choices can help in delaying natural ageing and also prevent a number of skin problems. Here are some tips on basic ways to care for our skin and our bodies in general:

1. Protect yourself from the sun:  One major way to take care of the skin is to protect it from the sun. Continuous exposure to the sun can cause wrinkles and other skin problems, not to mention an increase in the risk of skin cancer. To protect your skin from the sun:
– Always stay under a shade. Sun rays are strongest between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm, so it would be best to avoid the sun during this time.
– Use sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply sunscreen generously.
– Wear protective clothing. Cover your skin with tightly woven long-sleeved shirts, long pants and wide-brimmed hats. Also consider laundry additives, which give clothing an additional layer of ultraviolet protection for a certain number of washings, or special sun-protective
clothing — which is specifically designed to block ultraviolet rays.

2. Avoid Smoking
Collagen and elastin are fibres that give the skin elasticity and strength and smoking damages these fibres. As a result, the skin looks older and wrinkles faster. Smoking also reduces the oxygen and nutrients that are important for healthy skin.

3. Eat a healthy diet
A healthy diet is paramount for the overall wellbeing of every individual. Eating well helps you look and feel your best. A healthy diet consists of plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. It is also very important to drink plenty of water as it helps keep your skin
hydrated.

4. Manage stress properly
Proper stress management improves healthy skin and a healthy state of mind. When one is overstressed, the skin becomes more sensitive and this can trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. It is important to get enough sleep, make time to do things you enjoy, and set
reasonable limits.

Your skin is the window to your body and it goes a long way to reveal the state of your health. It is going to be with you throughout your entire life, so you might as well take proper care of it.
