SURVIVING A LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP

Communicating in a relationship is tough, but communicating in long distance relationships is even harder. If you choose to stay in a long-distance relationship in college it’s imperative that you have a plan for what happens next and that you both work towards that goal. While long-distance love can be a great thing for a finite time, eventually you probably want to be in the same place as your partner. It helps both parties to know when that will happen.

Make it a ritual to talk about the fun things you’ll do together. Maybe you can decide that every night you’re together, you’ll try new restaurants instead of going to the same places the next time you meet. The frequency of interaction in couples separated by distance needs to correlate to the same parameters of interaction when both are at home. It needs to be at a level agreeable to both parties. Leverage on social media and technology to cover up the gap in-between the both of you.

It takes two to tango. When only one of them puts the effort to carry it, it won’t last long because it will get exhausting for that person. Two people need to carry it together and there needs to be a final destination.

Don’t play the power games to try and see who cares less or more, or who hurts less or more. But most importantly, I think, learn to live without each other and appreciate how much lovelier you feel with them in your life. Learn that you don’t need each other. You want each other. That’s the real glue
