SOME SURPRISING HEALTH BENEFITS OF CAFFEINE

Caffeine is a naturally occurring chemical stimulant called trimethylxanthine and there are many misconceptions about the intake of it. Some group of people believe that caffeine can be addictive when taken over time and although there is a level of truth in this because caffeine is a stimulant to the central nervous system and regular intake of it does cause mild physical dependency; the truth is caffeine in no way threatens your physical, social or economic health like other addictive drugs do.

Another myth is that caffeine increases your chance of experiencing insomnia. Caffeine has a relatively short half-life and the human body quickly absorbs caffeine but also gets rid of it quickly. This means that it takes about eight hours for caffeine to live your system. Then this means taking a cup coffee in the morning would in no way affect your sleeping pattern at night.

However, it is important to note that too much intake of caffeine in the system is not healthy so it advisable to limit oneself to taking only 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine a day as it appears to be safe for most healthy adults. That’s roughly the amount of caffeine in four cups of brewed coffee, 10 cans of cola or two “energy shot” drinks.

These are some of the myths attached to the intake of caffeine but it will surprise you to know that caffeine has solid health benefits which are listed briefly below:

  • Caffeine cuts the risk of getting mouth and throat cancer by 50 percent
  • It reduces the risk of having type 2 diabetes
  • Caffeine also protects against Parkinson disease
  • In Japan research showed that caffeine helps to increase memory
  • It protects against cataracts
  • It can stimulate hair growth in bald men and women
  • it reduces the risk of stroke by 20 percent
  • It can help burn fat
