RWANDA IS WAY AHEAD OF THE REST OF US AS THEY APPOINT THEIR FIRST FEMALE MAYOR

Marie-Chantal Rwakazina replaces Pascal Nyamurinda, who resigned in April.

Rwakazina was a former economics lecturer at the University of Rwanda and is a development expert who has been working with the UN Development Programme, where she was a coordinator of the UN support programmes in the country.

Not only is she appointed mayor, she takes over to lead the country’s capital city of Kigali. At 45 years old, this is a tremendous leap for the economist who was elected by the council of the city of Kigali with 146 votes against 32 votes in favour of her opponent.

Article 160 of Rwanda’s elections law stipulates that the electoral college of the executive committee of the City of Kigali comprises of members of the Council of Kigali City; council members of the districts that make up the City of Kigali; and members of the bureau from all sectors of the city.

It’s great to see that more women are starting to occupy seats of power. We are because women like Marie are.
