SELF-DEFENCE TIPS EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW

Imagine you are out visiting a friend and on your way back home, you notice a hooded person walking behind you. What will you do? You have two options either to save yourself or allow whatever planned to take its cause.

Of recent, there has been an increase in cases of sexual assault and rape in Nigeria. Although it is hard to give a certain figure, it has been reported that no fewer than 150 women get raped every year. A 2014 United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) report titled “Hidden In Plain Sight” said in part that “around 120 million girls worldwide (slightly more than 1 in 10) have experienced forced intercourse or other forced sexual acts at some point in their lives.”

With this growing increase, it is only necessary for women to know some safety tricks they can use in times of trouble.

Always know that you have a right to fight: Statistics have proven that the odds of survival are higher if you do fight back. Aim for the eyes first and the groin second. Remember, though to use the element of surprise to your advantage, strike quickly, and mean business. You may only get one chance.

Yell: Yelling increases 33 percent of your chance to attract help. If you are in an environment where you can easily access people, it is important for you to scream in other to alert neighbours around of the situation. It can also scare the attacker away if they notice that you are defensive.

Use the environment: Be aware of your environment. If there are handy objects to use as weapons or shields, do not waste time in making appropriate use of them for the situation. Can you pull a fire alarm, smash windows to attract help?

Take self-defence training classes: It is not necessary to learn the martial arts techniques that are unrealistic, complicated and complex. Learning the basic tricks can be useful during times like this.

Use your sixth sense: Which means always do what your instinct tells you to do and from findings, women have very strong instincts. If you have a sense of foreboding, don’t second guess yourself. It is better to be safe than to ignore your instincts and become the victim of a violent crime.

Finally, escape is always your best option: If possible runaway, throw stones, yell for help or try to do anything that would attract the attention of other people. And if the criminal is after your purse or other material items, throw them one way while you run the other.
