BOLANLE OLUKANNI’S HEARTFELT THOUGHT ON DRUG ADDICTION

BBC Africa recently did a documentary on the adverse effects of codeine on the Nigerian youth. The opioid addictive gotten from a cough syrup has Nigeria’s youths hooked on it.  Depression, grief and the need to fit in with their peers are some the reasons some Nigeria youth are falling for this epidemic.

Like all opioids, codeine is in the same chemical family as heroin. It’s an effective painkiller but is also capable of giving you a euphoric high if consumed in large quantities. It is highly addictive and, if taken in excess, it can have a devastating impact on the mind and body.

An addiction to this drug can lead to kidney damage and seizures, it can also trigger mental psychosis – delusions, hallucinations, and even schizophrenia.

TV Presenter, Bolanle Olukanni who was present at the private screening of the documentary had the following about this mayhem eating some of the future leaders of the country.

Yesterday if you watched my Instastories you will see that I attended a screening of BBC Africa groundbreaking documentary “Sweet Sweet Codeine.” It left me heartbroken and distraught at the realization that Codeine, is a drug that is very very addictive and killing so many young people. According to the documentary as many as 3 million bottles of Codeine, a DAY is being consumed in Kano and Jigawa state. I am so happy with this news! I have never seen The Nigerian Government respond this rapidly to anything but after the release of the documentary a few days ago the Federal Ministry of Health led by Professor Isaac Adewole has banned Codeine as of today. Thank you. Thank you. This is a step forward in the right direction and I have to say A HUGE WIN for GOOD. PLEASE WATCH THE Documentary to get a better context of how Codeine is ruining our communities and also why the Ban is needed.
