EDITOR’S NOTE: NEW HABITS TO DEVELOP FOR A CHANGED LIFE

There is no such thing as having learnt everything you need to learn or being in a place of perfection. Something could always be better…

Lately, I’ve become obsessed with being extra cautious of what I take in, my attitude towards negativity and my habits. I even started practising Feng Shui with my car… baby steps, people. For someone who really doesn’t care if she’s sleeping on an air mattress or an actual bed, this is a huge step.

I started noticing that the more deliberate I became, the better I felt. If I felt as though I was in a toxic environment, I changed it. If I felt that certain friends gave me a bad vibe, I ensured that I spent less time around them. If I felt discontent with the state of anything in my life, I made actual efforts to change that thing and finally, I have learnt that no man is an island, so I am no longer afraid to ask for help where needed.

So, in the spirit of being deliberate, I started doing some research on habits to pick up to become a better version of myself. I’ll be sharing them below for those of us that would like to pick up a thing or two.

  1. Dont take your phone to bed with you.

I learnt this from editor-in-chief of XoNecole, Necole Kane who had this to say about her reasons for not bringing her phone to bed with her.

“I don’t bring my phone into the bedroom anymore. I think it’s very important to establish healthy boundaries with our phones and social media. At worst, they can be distracting and addictive, keeping our productivity low and anxiety high. Secondly, the constant feed into other people’s lives and negative news can put a damper on our spirits, as well as hinder our own personal growth. Did you know some people experience secondhand PTSD from reading about or viewing tragic and negative things on social media? (I learned this from my therapist!)”

She bought an alarm clock and allowed that wake her up instead. For me, I place my phone on my vanity table which is located far away from my bed so that I feel lazy should I need to think about the effort it would cost me with getting up to pick it. My ‘do-not-disturb’ feature is no longer for aesthetics alone either, if i had to receive phone calls after a designated time (right now, it’s 8pm), it simply wouldn’t ring except it’s a call coming from my fiancé or mother dearest for emergency purposes.

2. Shut out social media in the wee hours of the morning

This habit follows from not bringing your phone into bed with you. How you spend your early mornings could so easily determine how your entire day plays out. It is so important that you’re able to shut out social media before kick-starting your day. It is essential that you are able to instead, put out what you want to see in your day. The power of the tongue remember?  It is also important to ensure that you are in full control during those early hours where you’re not being dragged in so many places at once depending on your job or your chosen field of entrepreneurship. This is your time to pray, do yoga or meditate, exercise, plan out your day, as the case may be. It is also the time to profess positively into your day, week and future. I love reciting one of my favourite bible verses during this time.

3. Become a voracious consumer of information

The internet is a fantastic book store of information however, how many times are we utilising it to become more knowledgeable? The idea is to become better by becoming a sponge and absorbing the most information we can especially around areas of our expertise. I have a friend who’s always busy taking some online course or the other. Initially, we teased her about it as not only was she the most studied, she was the least employed. In a matter of months, all that changed and all she needed to do was apply this great library of information she had garnered with all her free time. We want to believe as millennials that the world is our oyster and we can become all that we want to through experience. As much as experience is key, knowing will save you a lot of trouble. A combination of both is possibly the most powerful thing anyone being can possess. I have made it a point to read at least one hour everyday. You could start too.
