3 DISEASES CAUSED BY MOSQUITOES
In our day-to-day pursuit, it is easy to become a train that never stops. There’s always something to be done – one more deliverable to take on, a project to take on, a meeting to be in, an event we must attend and the list goes on.
However, all it takes to stop this moving train we’ve become is just one bite. One mosquito bite can bring us to an abrupt halt and leave us rusty in our tracks.
A mosquito bite is really expensive and it’s best to avoid paying its price. I will be sharing 3 diseases a mosquito bite can cause and its impacts:
A disease caused by a plasmodium parasite, transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes. It is the largest killer of children. Malaria kills one child every 30 seconds making about 3000 children every day. In Africa, over a million people die of malaria each year according to UNICEF. Not onolly that, it equally obstructs personal and social development. It is also a major cause of poverty as the cost of malaria and treatment drains African economies, slowing economic growth by about 1.3 per cent a year.
Yellow fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes. The “yellow” in the name refers to the jaundice that affects some patients. Mild cases of Yellow fever are fever, headache, nausea and vomiting while serious cases may cause fatal heart, liver and kidney conditions. No specific treatment for yellow fever exists.
It is also referred to as Zika. It is majorly transmitted by mosquitoes, however, a pregnant mother can pass it on to her baby during pregnancy or as at the time of birth. Mostly, people with the virus don’t get sick and only one in five people experience the symptoms which includes a fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (pink eye). Zika can cause microcephaly (a serious birth defect of the brain) and other problems in babies whose mothers were infected while pregnant.
All these diseases can be prevented by making use of a mosquito repellant or ensuring that one sleeps under the secure cover of a mosquito net.
