SOST 101- INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF SORE THROAT

How often have you felt that itchy, burnin or irritated feeling your throat? What myths were you told about it ? Which of them have you considered to be true?

Myths surrounding sore throat include that children cannot have it, Cold weather causes it whereas it occurs when we come in contact with carriers. Another myth includes that sore throat cannot be prevented- A good good application of hand washing and safe hygiene will keep sore throat at bay.

Sore throat occurs as a result of infections or environmental factors. It often comes along with symptoms like; trouble  swallowing, earaches, stiff necks, severe  sore throat, runny nose, cough and hoarse voice.

It occurs as  Tonsilitis (swelling and redness in the back of the mouth), Laryngitis (Swelling and redness of the voice box) and Pharyngitis (area behind your mouth.

Sore throat can be treated with throat lozenges, cough syrup, antibiotics and pain relief depending on which has been prescribed by your doctor. Orthodox medicines are not the only effective remedy.  It can also be taken care of using a home remedy by:

  • Gurgle a mixture of warm water and a teaspoon of salt.
  • Drink warm liquids that feel soothing to the throat, such as hot tea with honey, soup broth  or warm water with lemon.
  • Herbal teas are especially soothing to a sore throat.
