HOW I’M LEARNING TO TRUST GOD
Learning to trust God is probably one of the most difficult things to do as Christians. This is mainly because the human mind can never understand the things of the spirit – 1st Corinthians 2: 14.
How do you explain to someone that not eating would make them add weight? Or the fact that giving up all they own will make them richer? This transcends all human logic and is therefore impossible to make sense of.
As a young christian who is learning more of God each day, I’ve come to realise that “I need God to trust God”. It’s actually humanly impossible for me to trust him. I absolutely cannot learn to trust him by devising 101 ways on how to trust him steadily.
What astounds me the most is also knowing that all the promises of God to us as humans is directly linked to trusting him. Hebrews 11: 6 tells us of how it’s even impossible to please God without faith. To fully receive from the father at all, depends solely on trust.
When I think of someone whose faith and trust in God marvels me, Abraham readily comes to mind. I’m amazed at how easily Abraham was willing to sacrifice what I would call God’s promise to him. Having Isaac was nothing short of a miracle in the first place. Willing to sacrifice him, when he and Sarah had obviously even aged more than when he was born, is simply mind blowing. One major lesson I learnt here is how Abraham treasured the giver of the gift more than the gift itself. He believed that God was able to make everything work out for his good, Isaac or no Isaac.
It irks me when I can’t even trust and believe God enough to obey in the small things; like following his nudge to talk to a stranger. Or his nudge to speak when I would rather be silent. Or his nudge to change an outfit I have on.
What I’ve learnt to do each day is to try to retain God in my thoughts. Matthew 6: 21 says, “for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”. God is able to make me trust him more if I honor him in my mind. He’s able to strengthen my resolve, he’s able to help me through his spirit “mortify the deeds of my flesh (my flesh would naturally not trust God) – Romans 8: 13.
What’s the benefit of trusting God one might ask? I would say trusting God is the basis of my existence as a christian. John 3:16 says that whoever believes in God would have an eternal life. Proverbs 3: 5-6 talks about how God will make our path smooth if we trust and acknowledge him in all our ways.
Infact if we want to partake of any of God’s blessing we have to trust him. I want to be blessed, I hope you do too.
